Daily Prayer

A short outline for daily prayer at home, work or wherever you are:

Make the sign of the cross and say:

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Then speak responsively or in unison:

(in the morning)
Morning Response

In the morning, O Lord, You hear my voice;
In the morning I prepare a sacrifice and watch.
(Psalm 5:3)

My mouth is filled with your praise,
And with your glory all the day.
(Psalm 71:8)

O Lord, open my lips,
And my mouth will declare your praise.
(Psalm 51:15)

(at midday)
Midday Response

Listen to my prayer, O God. Do not ignore my plea.
Hear me and answer me.

Evening, morning, and at noon
I cry out in distress, and He hears my voice.

Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you;
He will never let the righteous fall. (Psalm 55)

(In the evening)
Evening Response

Let my prayer rise before you as incense,
And the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.
(Psalm 141:2)

Joyous light of glory,
of the immortal Father;
heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ.
We have come to the setting of the sun,
and we look to the evening light.
We sing to God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit:
You are worthy of being praised with pure voices forever.
O Son of God, O Giver of life:
the universe proclaims your glory. (Greek, c. 200-400 AD)

(at day’s end)
Nighttime Response

It is good to give thanks to the Lord,
to sing praise to your name, O Most High;

To herald Your love in the morning,
Your truth at the close of the day. (Psalm 92:1-2)

Then make the sign of the cross again, saying:

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Then pray:

Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Then, if you want, pray for anything on your heart and mind

Pray in the morning or in the evening:

Morning
I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that you would keep me this day, also, from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please you. For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Evening
I thank you my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ your dear Son, that you have graciously kept me this day. And I pray that you would forgive me all my sins where I have done wrong and graciously keep me this night. For into your hands I commend myself, my body and soul and all things. Let your holy angel watch over me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Finally, say responsively or in unison:

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
